Moses fears the people will not believe him; the chapter ends with the words 'the people believed.' Between those poles God names Israel his firstborn son and arms the exodus with a threat that will fall on every Egyptian household.
Exodus Exodus 3:1-22
Moses asks two questions at the burning bush - 'Who am I?' and 'What is his name?' - and God answers both with one Hebrew word in two forms: ehyeh, the promise of presence that becomes the name above every name.
Genesis Genesis 31:1-21
The angel who appears in Jacob's dream at Genesis 31:11-13 names himself by his place — anokhi ha-El Beit-El — and reframes Jacob's earlier pouring of oil on the stone-pillar as an act of anointing. The verb that surfaces in Genesis only at this verse is the one that will name Israel's priests, kings, and Messiah.
