The brother who sold Joseph for silver now offers himself as a slave in place of Benjamin. Genesis 44 is the climax of Judah's transformation — and the substitution word it turns on runs from the Aqedah ram to the ransom-logion.
Genesis Genesis 43:1-34
In Genesis 38 Judah handed Tamar a pledge-object and walked away. In Genesis 43 he stands before his father and pledges himself: 'I myself will be surety for him.' The same Hebrew root, the same man, the direction reversed. That self-pledge unlocks the chapter — and lets Joseph's compassion 'grow warm,' answering with the very word — rachamim, compassion — his father prayed.
