Genesis Genesis 42:1-38
The verb that ran the deception now runs the reckoning. Joseph recognizes his brothers and plays the stranger; they bow without knowing him; and the dreams they tried to kill are fulfilled before their faces. Genesis 42 is one sustained dramatic irony, held open until Judah is transformed and Joseph weeps.

Genesis 38 is no digression. Wedged between Joseph's selling and Joseph's faithfulness, it turns on the same two-word demand — 'recognize, please' — that the brothers once made of Jacob. Now Tamar makes it of Judah, and the deceiver confesses: 'she is more righteous than I.' Through his sin and her risk, the messianic line is carried.
