What do the seven lampstands in Revelation 1 represent?

Revelation 1:20 decodes them directly: the seven lampstands (lychnia, G3087) are the seven churches. A lampstand is not the light — it is the stand that holds and positions the lamp, just as the church holds and positions the light of Christ.

Revelation answers this question directly — you don't have to guess. When John turns and sees seven golden lampstands in Revelation 1:12, the vision provides its own decoder two verses later: "The seven lampstands are the seven churches" (Rev 1:20). That's an equation, not an interpretation — the Greek uses eisin, "are."

The word for lampstand is lychnia (λυχνία, G3087), and the distinction embedded in the image matters. A lampstand is not the light. It holds and positions the lamp. The church is the stand, not the source. That's exactly what makes the threat to Ephesus so sharp:

"I will move your lampstand out of its place." — Revelation 2:5

Removing the lampstand doesn't just dim the light — it removes the church's capacity to carry the light of Christ in its city at all.

The image reaches back to the tabernacle. The golden menorah (מְנוֹרָה, H4501) in Exodus 25:31–37 had seven lamps, was beaten from a single piece of gold, and the Greek Old Testament uses lychnia (G3087) to translate it consistently. Zechariah 4 gives the interpretive key: "Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit, says YHWH of hosts" (Zech 4:6). The Spirit supplies the oil; the lampstand channels it as visible light.

When Revelation 11:4 describes the two witnesses as "the two olive trees and the two lampstands standing before the Lord of the earth," it's consciously echoing Zechariah's vision — seven key terms overlap between the two passages. But John multiplies it: Zechariah had one lampstand for one community; John has seven separate communities, each with their own lampstand, each called to hold the light of Christ in their own city.
