Exodus Exodus 17:8-16
Israel's first war after the exodus is decided not by Joshua's sword in the valley but by Moses' raised hands on the hill — held steady (אֱמוּנָה) by Aaron and Hur until sunset. Moses builds an altar and names it YHWH Nissi, 'YHWH is my banner,' and YHWH swears war on Amalek from generation to generation. The banner runs from this altar through the lifted serpent to the lifted Son of Man who gathers the nations.
Genesis Genesis 36:1–37:1
Genesis 36 closes the line of the non-elect brother: Esau is Edom, settled with chiefs and kings and a possession in hand — before Israel has a single king, and while Jacob still only sojourns. The genealogy's placement is its argument: election runs through the sojourner, not the settled.
